Exclusive Workshop with Cole Gilbert & SciVision Medical
Air Polishing & Biofilm Management + Laser Intro
Ideal for: Hygienists, Dental Therapists & Dentists
Air polishing is a valuable tool that every dental hygienist should utilise daily.
Keep up with the technological advances in Oral Hygiene by fast-tracking your success in incorporating Air Polishing into your daily practice. While air polishing is not a new technology, the technology has certainly advanced a lot. A fresh look at its benefits and treatment techniques will ensure that you are providing this successful, patient-pleasing treatment experience with the correct protocol that not only advances the results of your treatment, the patient's experience, but is also a very time-savvy / efficient protocol that should boost your turnover. Further technological advances have also helped make it more financially viable to equip yourself with an Air Polisher.
While traditional rubber cup polishing may be sufficient for many patients, the inability of the rubber cup to access all of the areas where stain is present is limiting, such as in sulcular and interproximal spaces. Having an air polisher at your disposal can drastically improve polishing results for the patients with heavy extrinsic stain from tobacco, coffee, red wine, and poor oral hygiene. By utilising the technology, patients are more satisfied with the results and spend less time in the chair. Practitioners should also experience less fatigue in removing difficult stain.
Preparedness is essential. Rather than introducing the air polisher midway through the appointment, incorporate its use into the dental hygiene treatment plan for the patient. When reviewing your patient schedule for the day, identify patients with crowding, heavy stain, or orthodontic appliances, also noting patients scheduled for sealant placement, those with implants, or on periodontal maintenance programs.
BONUS LECTURE
Light up your treatments even further with Laser-Assisted Hygiene and Periodontal Treatment!
For those of you already making use of a diode laser in the practice or wanting to learn:
A diode laser is a powerful therapeutic that adds many benefits to your Hygiene appointment pre and post-procedure. Boost the immune system, stimulate the periodontal tissues and make them more resistant to infection with a 5-10 minute Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR) that can also aid your scaling and patient experience. On Perio patients you will K*ll bacteria deeper than current instrumentation, stimulate fibroblasts and osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) to regenerate tissue and trigger the periodontal cells to promote faster healing.
While various laser wavelengths and devices are used in periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, paediatric, general, and aesthetic dentistry, diode lasers are most commonly found in the hands of the dental hygienist as a powerful adjunct to oral hygiene today, not only to make scaling easier.
Other common laser procedures hygienists can perform with lasers include whitening, desensitising, treatment of aphthous ulcers, herpetic lesions, peri-implantitis, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) via photobiomodulation. Learn about this painless, 5 minute procedure you can add to your Periodontal Maintenance/continued care hygiene appointment. Requires no anesthetic. Reduces the bacteria in the diseased gums, stimulates new cell growth and healing of the tissues, and reduces bacteria in the aerosols that we produce. This is used to help prevent the start of inflammation and/or help to prevent further periodontal breakdown.
